Bacon Bowls -- Hey, there is something green in my bacon!

If there is one thing our entire family can agree on, it's our love of BACON! In fact, bacon played a crucial role during the courting phase of my relationship with Mark. At the time, I was a strict vegetarian, but I kept packages of bacon in the fridge of my dorm room as "Mark bait". It worked!!

Emily and Clara have also tested bacon-positive.

The idea for these bacon bowls came from an old post on Not Martha, however my method is slightly different from hers. This combines basket-weaving and bacon... it's like crafting with food! (er... make that a food-like substance.) It's no surprise that these bacon bowls were a big hit in our household!

Here are some ideas for bacon bowls:

Fill with lettuce, tomato, and ranch dressing. The lettuce and tomato make this a healthy snack. (Ahem.)

Or fill with scrambled eggs for breakfast! Wouldn't this be a unique appetizer for a brunch?

To make your own bacon bowls, you will need a package of bacon, and small microwave safe dish, kitchen scissors, and a glass baby food jar.

Clean the baby food jar very thoroughly and be sure to remove all adhesive from the label. Place the baby food jar upside down on the microwave safe dish.

Lay two pieces of bacon to make an "X" over the bottom of the baby food jar as shown. Use kitchen scissors to trim the ends.

Next, weave slices of bacon around the ends. Are you getting hungry yet?? Wait for it... wait for it.... it gets better!

Cover the entire thing with a wet paper towel, and place in the microwave for about 4 minutes and 30 seconds total, checking after every minute. Microwave times vary, and ours is DIEING a slow and painful death, so yours may cook up much faster.

Set aside and allow to cool. Carefully pull the bacon bowl from the baby food jar, and fill with salad or eggs.

Time for the taste test.....

Success!!!!

Dear Valerie,

It's true. My official blood type on record is O++. The second plus is for bacon.

True story. When I was in college, I would wink at the girl working in the cafeteria who would make the BLTs. She would get distracted, and I would end up with a BLT with upwards of 7 bacon slices.

I've since slowed my bacon intake rate, but I can say that I ate a BLT every night for 6 months straight without having elevated cholesterol. Those were truly my (bacon) salad days.

Love,
Mark

@ Mark -- I am forever indebted to the power of bacon. It clouded your judgement just long enough to trick you into marrying me. Clearly I'm the one who got the better half of that deal! Muhahaha!

I love your blog chat. You know that already though. I'm also jealous because my husband reads my blog, but would never ever comment. I may have to introduce him to Mark.

The bacon bowl sounds delicious!

I also want you to know that my new sewing machine should arrive on Monday. I am very excited!

@ Christy -- I think the best way to get your hubby commenting on your blog is to feature a post about Bacon Bowls! Seriously, how could he resist?? Congrats on the new machine!! You must be so excited!!

Girl what are you trying to do to me? Back to the diet... Why is bacon so darn good. We used to be vegetarians also and the smell of bacon sometimes, was hard!

OMG you are totally my new best friend, lol! Our local store had a sale with $.50 bacon and I had 6 DIFFERENT messages on my answering machine from family and friends alerting me.

I guess I don't hide my bacon addiction very well. Plus my first instinct was to skip the microwaving and deep fry that sucker, but I applaud your good intentions with the lettuce!

Oh, thank you thank you!! Our picky little allergic-to-just-about-everything toddler LOVES bacon. It's one of the few fattening foods I can get into him, and well, he can't eat the whole pack, so SOMEONE has to eat the rest, right? I'm definitely trying this. Maybe even serving it for a brunchy birthday party for him in November if I like the results. I've never made my bacon in the microwave... I usually like my bacon as crispy little slivers just shy of burnt.

By the way, Christy - same here.. my husband looks at my blog from time to time but would never comment.

I think this would be so cute to serve at a brunch! Great idea!

1) "Mark bait" - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
2) Had no idea you were a recovering vegetarian, too! Yeah, try working the phrase "I don't eat much meat" into casual conversation with a COW FARMER sometime and you'll have a picture of Hubs and my first date.
3) Thanks for sharing the idea itself - it's awesome!

Very cute idea, my daughter who LOVES bacon, would swoon over this! By the way can I just say that picture of Mark biting into the bacon bowl looks just like an excited Emily picture. OMG.

My husband would love this. We made magic shell this week, and I was seriously considering making it bacon-flavored.

Super cute and I want to make a bacon bowl now. I saw them on Not Martha before but I forgot about them until now. Thanks for reminding me!

This is very clever! I especially like the salad bowl version.

I loved the Mark bait story. Now to get my blog-reading yet silent hubby to start commenting on my blog...

That looks yummy!

That story is SO cute! We've made these before too. If your microwave ends up dying, bacon cups work equally as well being cooked in the oven using a muffin tin (I've used the inside or the reverse side with equal success) :)

Valerie @ Inner Child Fun said...

@ Ivy -- The resemblance is kinda freaky, isn't it?? When she was born, my first thought was "Holy crap, I gave birth to my husband!!".

@ Mrs. Wright -- Wow, your addiction sounds serious! I found another great use for these bacon baskets BTW -- are you ready?? Cheesy mashed potatoes!!! I KNOW!!! If the two of us lived in the same town, we'd buy out all the bacon! LOL

Valerie @ Inner Child Fun said...

@ Infant Bibliophile -- You don't know how happy I am to hear that your son can have bacon! I love the idea of a birthday brunch... these would be so perfect for something like that. Good luck with them! Yummmm!!

@ Lenatta -- That is so funny!! I guess it's like they say... opposite attract, right? I was a strict vegetarian for five years. The weird thing was as soon as I was pregnant with Emily (I didn't know it at the time), I had major cravings for cheese steaks. So my vegetarian ways went out the window... then there was nursing... and then it was just too difficult to make 2 different dinners when there was a baby in the house... so much for being a vegetarian! But BACON!!! There is no substitute for bacon, I say!!

Valerie @ Inner Child Fun said...

@ Holly -- You mean... bacon ON ICE CREAM?? Holy crap, woman, I think you have blown my mind!

Holy Smokes that looks fantastic. I must try them. My youngest would eat a pig if it would slow down for her to catch it. lol These look divine and I must try. Thanks.

That is some fancy bacon!

I think I'm in bacon heaven. OMG seriously this is the greatest food invention EVER. I'd love to make bacon bowls and fill them with tons of warm spinach. My family loves spinach, but I have to put bacon in it. This is a great twist. I'm so excited I want to make this so bad!!

LOL! Mark is funny.

Zach would be all over a bacon bowl like white on rice. I will definitely have to try these!

Alas, I can't really eat bacon. :( It always makes me sad. Those look so good I can almost smell them through the screen!
