Gifts Kids Can Make -- Chocolate Nut Bark

I found this recipe for Chocolate Nut Bark in an issue of Real Simple magazine, and it's so simple and easy -- a five year old can do it (with a bit of supervision). That's my kind of "baking"!

To make your own, you will need: one 12 oz bag of semi sweet chocolate chips and about 2 cups of mixed nuts (ours were salted & roasted).

Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler. We like to add ours a little at a time.

In the meantime, ask someone to spray a 13 x 9 inch pan with non-stick spray. The recipe says to line the pan with parchment paper, but we don't keep that in this house due to the lack of actual baking. So we used non-stick spray instead. It worked! Man, I am soooo good at this.

Spread chocolate out evenly. Five year olds can do an exceptionally thorough job with this step.

Sprinkle mixed nuts over top!

Place in the refrigerator to harden up (about 30 minutes). Break into pieces, and place in a wax paper lined box.

Yummy!!

Dear Valerie,

I hope your readers understand that this would be much easier to do with actual parchment paper. You had to call me over to help, because the chocolate was stuck.

On second thought, we don't need parchment paper. Helping to break up the chocolate can be just one more reason to keep me around, like you need me for smashing bugs and opening jars. :D

Love,
Mark

wax paper might work as might tin foil... going to give this a try -- have some hazelnuts and almonds just lying around waiting to be used in something... yippee!!

This sounds good, and I love how easy it is. I also see that your choc chips are from Wegmans and I am incredibly jealous because we don't have a Wegmans here. My sister lives in upstate NY and they have Wegmans. It is an amazing store.

I love this idea. I mean, it would kill my son with his nut allergies, but otherwise, it looks delicious! ;) We could do a version with coconut and rice krispies... Another chocolate thing he loves to do is have me melt chocolate, put it in a plastic bag (or pastry bag) and pipe out letters onto freezer paper. Left for an hour or two, they harden, and we put them in the fridge in ziploc. He loves to pick an alphabet letter to eat. :)

@ Christy -- Oh yes, we are in love with our Wegman's. You will be happy to know we do not take it for granted! Maybe if we frequent the one near us enough, they will open one near you!

@ Infant Bibliophile -- That is such a great idea!! We will be trying the chocolate letters, for sure. I think this would be great with rice krispies, coconut, or even sweetened dried cranberries. It was so simple and easy to make!!

This is delicious! I lined a cookie sheet with aluminum foil, doubled the recipe, and it worked like a charm! Thanks!
