Flower Arranging 101 -- Dollar Store Style

With more snow forecasted for today, this sweet flower arrangement was a nice reminder that Spring will be coming soon!

Isn't it so bright and cheerful? Emily put it together all by herself, and the best part is that all of the materials for this craft either came from the thrift store or the dollar store. Very inexpensive!

First, we filled this thrifted basket ($0.20) with some floral foam ($0.50). Emily couldn't help but express her love for the dollar store during this step.

Next, I cut some of the flower stems off groups of fake flowers ($2.00) with wire cutters for Emily to arrange in the basket.

This kept her occupied (and quiet) for a long time!

.....still arranging........ okay, now she's ready.

She added a bit of floral moss ($1.00) in-between the flower stems, and tied some colorful curling ribbon ($1.00) on to the basket's handle.

She is so proud of her beautiful centerpiece!

When we were all done, she asked if we could make flower arrangements everyday. I think this activity was a winner!

Dear Valerie,

Make sure that Clara doesn't try to water these flowers!

Love,
Mark

What a fun, spring-y thing to do! I know Miah would love this because my Grandma has a centerpiece that she lets Miah rearrange every time we are there! I never thought of letting her make her own!

You know that Emily is an amzing child right?
I'm not sure mine would have the patience for this, but I was thinking of making a topiary style arrangment with them and you've given me the courage to tackle it!
You should enter this - or one of your other spring projects - in the contest over at Living with Lindsey http://www.livingwithlindsay.com/2010/02/are-you-up-for-challenge-again.html
It's a dollar-store decor challenge. You and the girls would be shoe-ins!

I love doing flower arrangements. I use to do real ones at a florest.
What a great project for your daughters. It's so pretty.

She looks so cute doing it! We have long kept a tote full of dirt with plastic Terra cotta pots, gardening tools and flowers in it for this kind of thing. Much messier but same idea. Seeing your day reminds me to get it out for Cali. We haven't had it out in a while. :) Happy almost-Spring!

She really has the talent for flower arrangement, I am now 21 yrs. old but still cant come up with a good flower arrangement. Also a very nice activity for the kids, their reward is to see the finish product. Good Job!

It's so pretty. I have a ton of flowers in my closet and everything I'd need to make this. Only my flowers are all winter colored like yellows oranges and browns. I love the dollar store!
