Cheap Thrills -- Inspired by Dandelions

For a fun time, have your kids collect dandelion seeds from the yard or park. This may sound easy in theory, but if your kids are like mine, they may get a bit distracted on their quest for seeds.

No, no, we're not blowing the seeds all over the ya--- Oops! Too late!!

That? That's an acorn cap, sweetie. No, no, we're looking for dandelion seeds... Keep looking!

Ah HA!! That's the ticket!

Next, draw some lines for stems on a piece of construction paper.

Apply some glue with a paint brush.

Sprinkle dandelion seeds on top of the glue! Fun, fun, fun!

Allow to dry....

Are we having fun yet??

Oh, yes, I think so!!!

That is the best use for dandelion seeds I've seen so far. So long as they don't give them away as seed mats!

Who decided dandelions were weeds anyway? They have so much potential for crafts, fashion, decoration, and food - okay, I'm on the fence about the food - but still! If you look at them in the right light, they're even kind of pretty. And, planting them is child's play! :)

@ An Almost Unschooling Mom -- You're right, as far as weeds go, they really are a lot of fun! I used to love making bouquets with them when I was little, now the girls do the same. :-) Not sure about eating them, but I hear they taste great fried..???

Valerie, Dandelion greens are often found in pre-mixed salads... they have a slightly mustardy taste. I love this craft!

@ Raising a Happy Child -- Thank you!!

@ Entertaining Mom -- With a vinaigrette dressing, they are pretty good! I've never eaten the flowers though... I don't think I'm that brave!

Love your pictures and the commentary. I'm not sure my kids could pick those puffy white dandelions without blowing on them.

@ Mama King -- That's so funny! It seems everyone has nicknames for these, but "poofy heads" made my laugh out loud!!

It is awesome that you incorporated the dandelions into a craft project. In addition to being fun, they are free and plentiful.
