Mother's Day Gifts Kids Can Make -- 2 Ideas for Laminate Samples

Here's another fun post for our series of Inexpensive Mother's Day Gifts Kids Can Make (using items found at the hardware store)!!

Mark doesn't know it yet, but I'm secretly plotting to have our kitchen countertops re-done. I picked up some samples, and a few price quotes the last time I was at the hardware store. These pretty bookmarks were made from leftover laminate samples, which makes them very sturdy. Added bonus -- they were so easy to make!

If you don't have laminate samples at home, they are available for free at any hardware store. I used old kitchen scissors to trim the sides of the sample, and I was surprised how easy it was to cut through the laminate!

I trimmed about 1 cm on either side, and then rounded the corners a bit.

Emily helped thread the ribbon through the hole at the top, and they were done!

But wait -- there's more......

I cut up the leftover strips that we had into smaller pieces for Emily to create a fun mosaic card!

She'll take any excuse to use glue, and the look is quite unique!

I think she would spend all day gluing things, if I let her.

I think it turned out great, and there's enough laminate leftover for a "Dad" card later too!

Have fun!!

What good ideas. The pattern on the laminate makes for an interesting design. I can imagine the fun my children would have making the mosaic. It's too late for Mother's Day in the UK, but I could use this idea for another project.

Thanks for sharing.

Those are really nice - I would happily receive those for Mother's Day - and I can see from the lack of response from Mark, that he took your "surprise" really well! :)

What a great idea! Very clever. I need to start thinking more out of the box. I think some of the blogs that I read have helped me look at things a bit differently.

you could jazz it up with some glitter! or maybe a pressed flower!

That would be great for a study of Rome and their mosaics!
So, in all the art supplies you have, you don't have a corner rounder?

@ Christy -- Thank you!! I think they would make nice Father's Day gifts too. Have fun!

@ An Almost Unschooling Mom -- Looks like Mark has no idea what to say! This should be interesting!!

@ Ticia -- I do indeed have a corner rounder, but the laminate was too thick. Bummer, huh?

@ danita -- I love that idea! We were thinking of doing a project with pressed flowers today... fun!

We are making the bookmarks for end of the year teacher gifts.

I don't think Mark has ever been speechless here before!

Great for Father's Day too. It's easier for me to find ideas for Mother's Day, so I'll save this for June!

A woman after my own heart! I am glad to know I am not the only person who would make something from a scrap and then take the scraps from the aforementioned scrap and make something else with it!

Love that idea. That will work great in my preschool class.
Thanks for sharing.
