Indoor Herb Garden Update... Sprouts!

When we woke up this morning, we were greeted by these.....

.... sprouts of basil from our indoor herb garden!! To celebrate, we read the book Seeds! Seeds! Seeds! by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. What a fabulous find this book turned out to be, and I highly recommend it if you have any junior gardeners in your household!

Then, we decorated picture frames by gluing beans to them. (This activity came straight from the book above.) There are so many fun gardening activities mentioned in this adorable story. Emily loves gluing things, so this was really fun for her!

We're looking forward to more sprout celebrations soon!

Dear Valerie,

Are you doing crafts with my lunch again? I am already skinny enough!

Love,
Mark

Very cute frame. You might have some grandparent gifts in the making there.

@ Mark -- After all this time, you didn't realize that I regularly raid the pantry for art supplies? You might also want to lock up the bathroom closet.... ;-)

@ Ivy -- I was thinking the same thing! I'm pretty sure the frame came from the dollar store, or a thrift store. Emily was so proud of it!

Nancy Wallace is a huge favorite of mine. Her other books are wonderful as well. So informitive and yet, not above their heads at all. I used a couple of them in my Math In The Garden class last summer. Fun stuff!

I love the bean frames. Very cute Emily!

PS I keep trying to make you a craft to send with your package and it is becoming a craft fail. I may never try to make another one. lol! I'll send it soon.

LOl sorry Mark's comments are just classic. I can't help but to read them.

That is so cool!!!!! Gage and I loved watching our seeds turn into sprouts untill the 110 degree weather killed them all in one day.

We def need to try to grow our garden again. We are working on backyard getting it ready for next year to start a large garden. OUr backayrd is a blank slate so it's gonna take that long to get it ready. lol

The frame is so cute, It will be perfect to put a picture of her holding her grown plant!

I love those first little sprouts. There's so much hope in them.

The bean frames are so cute!

The juxtaposition of the bean and sprout photos sparked a thought. Have you tried making bean sprouts for Chinese food yet? That seems like something Emily would enjoy.

@ Val in the Rose Garden -- Now I'm intrigued by your "craft fail"! What in the world...??? You have me so curious.

@ Lisa Anne -- We had a few herb plants last winter, but I don't think we took good care of them. I'm notorious for killing house plants, but I'm hopeful this time after doing so much work on our garden this summer. A blank slate of a yard is perfect for gardening! You're so lucky!

@ Stephanie -- That's a great idea! We'll definitely give it a go... thank you!

We love Seeds, Seeds, Seeds, too! We also have Apples, Apples, Apples and Leaves, Leaves, Leaves as well as Shells, Shells, Shell by Wallace. ER loves those books. I have yet to do any of the suggest activities, I should get on that!

It's been a while since you posted this article but I wanted to follow up by saying that I just had my nephew for the weekend and spent some time creating a couple original frames. Awesome!
